Clarissa
Pluto glittered white out the window, icy peaks making Clarissa shiver at the sight of them. She would love to don a space suit and walk those peaks, but unfortunately the Pluto surface wasnât open for exploration. The spaceship aimed its docking clamp at a pit that went deep under the Plutonian surface to the farming colonies below. As the surface vanished into rock, Clarissa called up her latest messages on her data pad. It would take half an hour to complete the pressurization and security cycle for docking. She had time to kill.
Another message from Vincent. Clarissa smiled and hit play, grateful the ship did not have a real-time communication relay. Her dark hair had matted from three full days spent in this narrow seat. Clarissa wasnât one of those girls who needed every detail to be pixel-perfect, but she still wanted to look presentable.
Vincent came into frame, broad shoulders, simple flannel shirt, and thick brown hair Clarissa had once longed to run her hands through. He held a fat rabbit in his hands with a white face flecked with black spots.
âGreetings, intrepid traveler!â Vincent waved at the camera. âHereâs your daily update from Luna III. Freckles has almost mastered the ring toss.â His voice crackled through the tiny speakers, the data having been corrupted during transit. The image wavered yet, could not hide the warmth and excitement in Vincentâs eyes. He set the white-and-black flecked rabbit aside and lifted a fat brown one into view of the camera. âPorkchop here is going to be a dad again! He still canât hop a double hurdle, but Porky the second just cleared three.â Vincent stroked Porkchop between the ears and then set him aside. In the background, more rabbits hopped across the lawn, nibbling on grass in stark contrast to the rocky gray lunar surface beyond the window behind them.
Clarissa hadnât known it was possible to cultivate grass on the moon before she met Vincent. Nor had she known there were so many varieties of rabbit.
âWeâll have a whole new show worked out by the time you get back.â Vincent grinned, showing wide white teeth. That had been the start of all this, Clarissa falling for a handsome grin. She hadnât realized about the rabbits back then, among other things. So when Vincent had posted a job, she had taken it.
âCanât wait to hear all about your trip, and we all miss you.â Vincent leaned closer to the camera. âAlexis isnât nearly as good at sweeping out the hutches.â
Alexis? Clarissa leaned closer to the screen, backing up the recording. Yes. Alexis. Shit. Clarissa should have known her sister would use this chance to steal her man.
Vincent gestured to something offscreen and Alexis came into frame. They were identical twins, Clarissa and Alexis, both with long dark hair, sharp noses, and dark eyes. Alexis had her hair pulled back and wore gray coveralls, rubber gloves, and a perpetually pissed-off expression.
âHurry back sis!â She sounded less-than-happy to be cleaning out rabbit hutches.
